The pack
Mountains are wonderful adventure playgrounds but you need to take certain precautions when exploring them:
A safety pack to bring with you which includes a AVD (Avalanche victim detector) plus probe plus shovel, but be aware that these three items alone don’t offer you complete security.
AVD
Avalanche transceiver:
It allows you to locate a buried skier or hiker with an AVD in transmission mode.
It enables you to be searched for by a user with a AVD in search mode.
The shovel
Shovelling takes on average longer than finding the victim.
It must therefore be efficient.
The probe
Allows you to locate a victim and gauge the depth of snow under which they are buried.
Warning
Carry the APD as close to the body as possible to prevent it being torn away.
Check it is operating correctly at each outing .
Practise regularly.
